Flooded Houses in Almost Every Region of Slovakia

Water accumulating from severe rainfall has flooded houses in almost every region of Slovakia, with even places without rivers being affected due to water draining from fields and mountains, Interior Minister Robert Kalinak said on Wednesday.
"Everyone is on their feet, working all day and night without respite," said Kalinak of the members of the integrated emergency team, with fire-fighters deployed to the flooded areas for the entire night. As soon as the water level drops, the rescue teams will begin draining the water away from flooded buildings.
Kalinak also said that Slovakia will file an official request to receive financial resources from the EU Solidarity Fund to compensate for damage caused by the floods. According to him, the financial aid could equate hundreds of millions of euros. The last time that Slovakia received resources from the Solidarity Fund was in 2004, to alleviate damage caused by windstorms in the High Tatra mountains.
