KDH: Ireland Confirms Lisbon Treaty Bad for Small Countries

Presov, June 14 - At its meeting in Presov on Saturday, Opposition KDH Council criticised the change of way and contents of current Government Coalition's policy, and it appreciated the self-confidence of Irish citizens who rejected the Treaty of Lisbon in the referendum on Thursday.

"The Irish proved to be a self-confident European nation that isn't afraid to defend their own national and state interests, and they confirmed KDH's opinion that the Treaty of Lisbon isn't advantageous for small states, and it weakens their sovereignty. We appreciate that Slovakia is a member of the EU, but further centralisation would reduce the sovereignty of individual member states," said KDH chairman Pavol Hrusovsky.

KDH Council called on the party members to deliver through party regional councils' chairs their proposals regarding the candidates to the European Parliament by September 15, 2008.

The session also dealt with KDH's programme 'More to family'. "The Government is entirely inactive in family-related policy, and it cannot adopt conceptual measures, that's why KDH is organising conference on 'Family' throughout Slovakia, where we discuss not only with the representatives of political parties, but also with third sector's representatives, and we are coming with new proposals on how to improve family-related policy in Slovakia," said KDH vice chairman Julius Brocka.
